PETERSEN FINE ARTS, LLC is an art advisory business founded in 2004 by Barbara Petersen specializing in modern and contemporary art.  Ms. Petersen has over forty years experience working in the New York City art world buying and selling art to major collectors, museums, and corporations.  Ms. Petersen is also a certified art appraiser. 


Ms. Petersen has held senior positions in leading galleries, museums, and an auction house in New York City.  Formerly, Senior Salesperson, Gagosian Gallery, and Director, Stux,  Modern, and Beitzel Galleries.  She has also worked at Christie's, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Early in her career, Ms. Petersen was awarded a distinguished, "Helena Rubenstein Fellowship" in the Independent Study Program for graduate studies in curatorial training at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

 

Ms. Petersen received a B.A. In Fine Arts at New York University and pursued graduate studies in Fine Arts at Hunter College, C.U.N.Y. Some of the acclaimed art historians she studied with include Horst Janson, Robert Rosenblum, and Rosalind Krauss. 

 

PETERSEN FINE ARTS, LLC advisory service of modern and contemporary art includes expertise in areas of acquisitions and sales, appraisals, analytic market and financial reports, price database, risk ratings, historical and provenance research, lost, stolen, and forgery art check, framing, conservation, and collection management.


Ms. Petersen is a certified art appraiser and does appraisals of modern and contemporary art. She provides formal appraisal reports that adhere to the IRS standards of professional practice and are in full compliance with Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) Code of Ethics and Professional Practices. The written art appraisals include those for purposes of insurance, charitable donation, capital gains, estate tax or equitable distribution.  

 

CENTER FOR ART AND EARTH, Inc. (1992) Ms. Petersen is the Founder and President of CENTER FOR ART AND EARTH, Inc., a private foundation formed to raise awareness, appreciation, and responsibility for the earth and the environment through the visual arts.

 

BLACK POINT ESTATE AND GARDENS, Lake Geneva, WI, a Wisconsin historic landmark, is the former Seipp/Petersen family Victorian summer home built in 1888. Ms. Petersen was influenced by the family art collection at the Black Point Estate and is involved with the art programs at the museum.
